CHARLESTON -- A grocery store employee was hit over the head and robbed of a day's proceeds while trying to make a night deposit Wednesday at a Charleston bank.

Department of Safety officers are investigating the robbery, which occurred at about 10:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Citizens Bank, 207 E. Commercial.

According to police reports, Randy D. Harper, an employee at Town and Country Supermarket, was struck in the face by a man dressed in dark clothing as he was making the store's night deposit. The man grabbed the bank bag and ran east on Commercial Street. A second employee, Saul Sager, had followed Harper to the bank for assistance. Sager witnessed the incident and gave chase, but was unable to catch man.

The investigation is on-going. Police had not determined how much money had been taken by Thursday afternoon.
