The Cape Girardeau Fire Department dispatched two water rescue units Saturday following a call that a young girl had fallen into the Mississippi River and a man had entered the water to rescue her, but rescuers found a different situation when they arrived on scene. A 12-year-old girl became stuck chest-high in mud in a creek near the Red Star Access while playing with several other children, Cape Girardeau police spokesman Sgt. Rick Schmidt said. Rey, who lived nearby and was outside at the time, heard the children say the girl was in trouble and pulled her from the mud. An ambulance that had been dispatched continued to the scene to check on the condition of the girl and Rey. No one was injured. (LAURA SIMOn)
