Mr. Q is a dependent man living independently.
His vision is poor and his education is limited, and he is a non-insulin-dependent diabetic. All of these problems combine to make it difficult for Mr. Q to read labels and stick to a restricted diet. However, he manages for now to live alone in a rented home and to do his own cooking.
He has a son and daughter who try to help as much as they can, but with jobs and families to tend to, they don't get over to check on their father as much as they would like.
Mr. Q's income is limited, and he could use help with rent, utilities and groceries. He also needs paper products, toiletries, and lots of Equal sweetener.
For Christmas Mr. Q would like to receive size 44 boxer shorts, size large, colored undershirts with long sleeves, and everyday pants size 42 by 30. He also needs a large winter coat and a new skillet to cook with.
Even fresh fruit would help make Mr. Q's Christmas special. His favorites are bananas and grapes.
Christmas for the Elderly provides people with special requests that many take for granted. Food, taxi coupons, toiletries, simple paper products and money for medications are just a few of the donations that would make an elderly person's entire year easier.
The program, in its 12th year, is co-sponsored by Cape Girardeau County Health Department and the Southeast Missourian.
Gifts may be delivered to the Southeast Missourian or the Cape Girardeau County Health Center through Friday.
Cash contributions, taxi coupons, paper products and grocery store gift certificates are always needed and may help elderly people all year long.
Contributions may be mailed to Christmas for the Elderly, P.O. Box 699, Cape Girardeau, Mo., 63702-0699.
