Cape Girardeau police had one man in custody and were searching for a gun in the area of Good Hope and Middle streets after responding to reports of two shots being fired in the area.
More than half a dozen officers, under the direction of Sgt. R.F. Schmidt, were searching about 6:45 p.m. for a small caliber handgun behind an abandoned house near the corner of Good Hope and Middle streets.
Police received a description of the shooter as a man in sweat pants and a black T-shirt. The man taken into custody was wearing a black T-shirt but wasn't wearing sweat pants.
No one was injured by the shots, which were fired south toward the Salvation Army store on Morgan Oak Street from the 400 block of Good Hope Street, according to initial reports.
Police did not release the name of the man in custody. Schmidt said at the scene that he would be detained on suspicion of unlawful use of a weapon and "a couple of other things" if the gun could be located.
