Cape Girardeau police officers responded early Saturday morning to a report of shots fired at Park Drive and North Fountain Street to find a 44-year-old man dead.
The victim was identified as Matthew Ervin, who was lying in the street when officers arrived shortly after 1:40 a.m., according to a news release. He appeared to have been shot and was deceased when officers arrived.
Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton estimated Ervin's time of death at approximately 1:42 a.m. He would not comment on the where on his body the victim was wounded.
The Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad has been activated to investigate.
At this time there are no suspects in custody, said Jason Selzer, public information officer with the Cape Girardeau Police Department. Officers have talked to several people who live in the area and are following up on leads, he added.
