The driver of the other car had minor injuries. That man, Zuri Edwards, 26, of St. Louis, was charged Monday with assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest by flight and driving with a revoked license.

Police said Edwards was sought in connection with seven robberies when he refused to stop for an officer Sunday. Police chased him across the Poplar Street Bridge into Illinois, where he allegedly made a U-turn and returned across the bridge into St. Louis.

Authorities said Smugala was getting ready to place spike strips to stop the fleeing car when his patrol car was hit.
