An accidental shooting Sunday at Luhr Bros. Inc. in Cape Girardeau claimed the life of a 23-year-old Scott City man.

According to Cape Girardeau County Coroner Michael Hurst, Keith Anderson died from a single 12-gauge gunshot wound to the chest around noon at 801 Progress St.

"Apparently, as he reached into the back seat of his vehicle to get the gun the safety was off and a coat hanger became lodged in the trigger guard," Hurst said. "In my opinion, this was accidental."

Hurst said Anderson, who was employed as an assistant football coach at Charleston High School in Charleston, Mo., was reportedly engaged to be married in May. He was found by his fiancee's brother following the shooting.

Because the shooting was ruled as accidental, no investigation is pending.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.
