ANNA, Ill. -- Authorities in Illinois have confirmed that a Mounds man died after being struck by a freight train late Sunday night in Anna.
Jeffrey W. Kelley, 49, died at 2:15 a.m. Monday after being flown to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of critical injuries, according to the Illinois State Police.
Kelley was lying in the center of the tracks just south of North Main Street in Anna when he was struck by a northbound Canadian National Railroad freight train around 10:45 p.m. Sunday. Train personnel attempted to warn Kelley of its approach, according to a news release.
Police said alcohol was a factor in the incident.
