KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City, Kan., man has been charged with wounding a Kansas City, Mo., police officer during an exchange of gunfire.
Hugh L. Riley, 28, was charged Tuesday with assault of a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action. Bond was set at $500,000.
Police said Riley shot an officer whose partner then fired back. Riley remained in serious condition at a hospital, where he was under police guard.
The 29-year-old officer who was shot was released from the hospital Tuesday after being treated for a gunshot wound to her right arm.
Police said the shooting happened about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday after officers were called to investigate prowlers near a car in an east Kansas City neighborhood.
Police said they did not know why the gunman shot the officer.
The shooting was the second involving Kansas City police this week. Two officers shot and killed Clifton Isaac, 41, early Sunday after he pointed a gun at the officers, authorities said. Police later found three guns belonging to Isaac at the scene.
