NEW MADRID - A man was seriously burned following a meth lab explosion early today.

The Standard Democrat newspaper reported that at 4:25 a.m. today, the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department and the SEMO Drug Task Force responded to a report of an explosion on County Road 820. Upon arrival they found a victim with serious chemical burns.

The victim was transported to Missouri Delta Medical Center at Sikeston.

During their investigation, officers also responded to a vehicle fire on County Road 824. According to New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens, investigators believe the burnt vehicle may be the result of arson and linked to the meth lab explosion.

Stevens said names are being withheld pending the filing of formal charges.
