A local man is in custody pending formal charges in connection with a Monday morning robbery at a Cape Girardeau drugstore, police reported.

About 8 a.m., police received a report that a man had come into Walgreens, 1 S. Kingshighway, and presented a note to someone at the pharmacy counter, demanding prescription drugs, said Darin Hickey, public information officer for the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

The suspect took an undisclosed amount of drugs, fled on foot to a vehicle parked near Kmart, 11 S. Kingshighway, and left, Hickey said.

Shortly after 1 p.m., the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted Cape Girardeau police in arresting a man at Dexter Bar-B-Que, 236 S. Broadview St., Hickey said.

Police are investigating whether the suspect -- whose name has not been released pending the filing of formal charges -- was involved in a pair of robberies overnight in Dexter, Mo., Hickey said.

He said two gas stations were robbed before 7 a.m. Monday. Based on descriptions of the vehicle and suspect in those cases, Cape Girardeau police are working with Dexter police to determine whether the robberies are connected, Hickey said.

He said at this point, officers do not expect any additional arrests in the case.

Hickey declined to release details about the suspect before charges are filed, saying only that he is a local man in his 20s.
