A Cape Girardeau man is accused of assaulting his girlfriend, then stealing her car.

Marcus Dewayne Winston, 40, was arrested by Cape Girardeau sheriff's deputies Monday. He has been charged with felony counts of second-degree domestic assault and stealing.

The victim said she and Winston had been in a verbal altercation earlier Nov. 28 that resulted in property damage to her vehicle, resulting in her filing a police report with Cape Girardeau police and Winston leaving, Cape Girardeau County deputy Lori Droge wrote in a probable-cause report.

About 2 a.m., the victim heard Winston unlock the deadbolt of their apartment in the 1100 block of Hidden Valley Drive, and she tried to push Winston back when the steel chain lock held, Droge wrote.

Winston broke the trim off the door, and when he gained entry, he shouted, "I know you called the police on me!" He punched the victim in the forehead, she fell to the ground, and he kicked her in the stomach when she rolled up into a ball on the floor, the report said.

After the attack, Winston demanded the victim give him a ride, Droge wrote. When she said no, he grabbed the car keys to her 2002 Oldsmobile Alero off the kitchen table and pushed her into the table when she blocked the door. He ran out of the apartment and drove away in her car, according to the report.

Droge reported she saw a red raised spot on the victim's forehead, a scratch on her forearm and a swollen wrist. The victim also told Droge that Winston had assaulted her before.

Winston's bond was set at $6,000, cash only.
