Jim Maevers has long been a fixture in the Jackson business community. Thursday he was honored as the Sam Walton Small Businessman of the Year award for Jackson.

"Mr. Maevers has been an example to the community of what a true business leader should be," said Rick Boyd, manager of the Jackson Wal-Mart Super Center. "I congratulate him on his work in the community."

"I would like to thank the Sam Walton family for their contribution to the Jackson Chamber of Commerce with this award program," Maevers said. "I truly enjoy being a part of the Jackson community and I am thankful that Jackson has continued to be a wonderful place to live and raise a family."

The award is named for Sam Walton, the late founder of the Wal-Mart chain.

Maevers began his Jackson career as Video Department manager at Schaper's IGA in 1987, after serving as a field engineer for Telex Computer Products of Tulsa. It later grew into Super Video, which he now owns, along with his wife. He is now part owner of Maevers Foods, Inc., which operates Schaper's IGA Plus and Save-A-A-Lot Food Store in Jackson, a well s Save-A-Lot locations in Cape Girardeau and Sikeston. He also manages commercial and rental property for Maevers Management Co., Inc., which includes Schaper Shopping Center and Main Street Centre in Jackson.

"It's a well-deserved award," said Ken Parrett, executive director of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, "after what he has done for the community and the chamber during the last year.

"His commitment to the community is exceptional and the ideals he posses are outstanding."

Maevers has been active in the chamber and the Jackson Rotary Club for a decade, serving as chamber president 1993-94. He has been on various boards for both organizations.

"I have striven to exceed my customers' expectations in all the businesses I have been involved, in," Maevers said.
