CALLAO, Mo. (AP) -- Authorities say a northcentral Missouri man is dead after being hit by a train that he ran toward while drinking with friends.

Macon County deputies say Richard Scott of LaPlata and the others were partying outside a Callao home Thursday night when he set down his drink and ran for a passing train. Sheriff Robert Dawson said he believes that alcohol played a role in Scott's death.

Dawson said it appears that the 34-year-old Scott may have been showing off for his friends when he ran for the train, and either came too close and was hit, or tripped and fell underneath. The sheriff said Scott's point of impact was several cars behind the engine of the train.
