A desire to raise her children in a better environment led Lupe Abernathy and her family from Los Angeles to Perryville and eventually to Jackson. A desire to work closer to home has led her to open a Jackson location for her Hands Down Nail Salon.
Abernathy has operated out of Marilyn's at 125 N. Main in Cape Girardeau for four years. Now in addition that shop, she will have her own Hands Down salon at 604 N. Main in Jackson -- behind The Designing Team.
"It's going really well," said Abernathy, whose given first name is Guadalupe. "I'm finding a lot of people who were tired of driving to Cape every two weeks. It's made it much more convenient for them."
It has also made it more convenient for Abernathy, who said she can usually make it from home to she shop in a few minutes.
"I am just one person, though," she said. "I do appreciate appointments being made. That's why I have a cellular number (270-3029). I can be here at a moment's notice. I live in Jackson and my kids go to the Jackson schools. I want to be close to my home."
At Hands Down, Abernathy specializes in sculptured nails, as well as offering pedicures and manicures. She also offers hand-filing for all work.
She will be introducing "Essie," a time-tested line of polish, which has just been introduced in Missouri.
"I'm very excited about that," she said. "Some people may already familiar with it. I believe people will be very pleased with it."
To launch the Jackson location, Abernathy is offering several specials. A full set of nails is $25 and fills are $18. Manicures are $13 and pedicures $20. All work is guaranteed for up to two weeks. Any repair work is included in the initial price.
Abernathy also teaches aerobics.
