HICKMAN, Ky. -- Kentucky Transportation officials say they've closed the Dorena-Hickman Ferry due to low water on the Mississippi River.
Service was halted at 9 a.m. Saturday after Capt. Ed Floyd said water at the mouth of Hickman Harbor is only 5 to 6 feet deep. Floyd told transportation officials that at least 7 feet of water is needed to operate the ferry safely.
The Dorena-Hickman Ferry connects Highway 1354 at Hickman, Ky., with Route A and Highway 77 near Dorena, Mo. The ferry is the only direct route between the two states.
