The story of a Cape Girardeau girl's recovery from cancer has reached a national audience.
The story of Lorelai Clubb, specifically her homemade music video inspired by Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off," is featured in a piece at www.people.com, the online site for People Magazine.
Clubb has received an outpouring of support from her hometown of Cape Girardeau during her lengthy and difficult treatment, including a bone-marrow transplant.
A grassroots campaign to wear green, Lorelai's favorite color, on the day of her transplant was embraced by hundreds of students and friends.
The video, part of music therapy at the hospital, was posted earlier this month. The public relations department at Children's Hospital helped produce it.
The lyrics address some of the challenges and frustrations of treatment, to which Lorelai shakes it off.
"I have never met a patient that is more obsessed with someone than Lorelai is with Taylor Swift," Christy Merrell, who works with long-term patients at Children's Hospital on creative outlets to engage and lift their spirits, told People Magazine.
"I'm bummed I can't go to the concert," Lorelai told her. "Do you think you can help me write a song and maybe we can get it on YouTube and maybe it'll go viral?"
"She had an idea of what she wanted to do," Merrell said, "but she was noncommittal at the time: 'I don't know what to say.' And that's typical of kids when you start writing songs." Merrell told her: "We'll just brainstorm some stuff. What's it like being in the hospital?"
The video has been seen more than 15,300 times as of Monday afternoon.
