While Sally Lipke and Susan Burmeister are both first-year teachers at St. Paul Lutheran School, they bring quite different backgrounds with them.

Lipke, who will be teaching second grade, has taught school in Indiana and Illinois. She has been out of the classroom during her 16 years in Cape County, though. She previously served as director of Trinity Day Care.

"I'm excited to be back, working hands-on with students," said Lipke, wife of Principal Al Lipke. "My duties at Trinity were mainly administrative. It will be nice to get back into a real classroom."

Burmeister, meanwhile, will be getting her first taste of teaching. The Truman, Minn. native graduated this spring from Concordia University in Nebraska. She will be teaching seventh and eighth grade language arts and will be seventh grade home room teacher.

"It's a very friendly community and school," said Burmeister, who grew up in a town of 1,200 people. "It's much larger than my home town."

Both women enjoy reading. Lipke also likes to walk. Burmeister lists travel as a hobby.

Lipke has been around St. Paul for some time, but is now officially part of the school.

"It's exciting being able to work in my home congregation," she said.

St. Paul opened its school year Thursday.
