The Phi Kappa Phi Chapter at Southeast Missouri State University recently inducted 58 students at an initiation and installation ceremony in the University Center.
Phi Kappa Phi is an international honor society for academic distinction that brings together individuals from a variety of disciplines.
The society is open to men and women in all academic fields who have demonstrated excellence of scholarship and integrity of character.
Fall 1992 Southeast graduates and seniors who rank in the upper 10 percent of their class and have a grade point average of at least 3.75 on a four-point scale were invited to join. Also invited were juniors who rank in the upper five percent of their class and have at least a 3.85 grade point average, and graduate students who are near graduation, have at least a 3.9 grade point average and have an outstanding undergraduate record.
"From an academic and intellectual sense, we are initiating the cream of the crop," said Dr. Carl T. Train, chapter president and professor of biology. "It is a real honor for these students to be initiated because it's something that they can take with them beyond graduation.
"I think it's a real plus for Southeast to have Phi Kappa Phi on its campus. It's just one of the many indicators that we have a strong academic program," said Train.
Southeast faculty - also Phi Kappa Phi members - who were installed as new chapter officers, are: Train, professor of biology, president; Jeanine Larson Dobbins, reading recovery teacher leader, president-elect; and Carol S. Johnson, graduate student in psychological counseling, vice president.
Faculty who remain as chapter officers, are: Dr. Katherine Parrish, associate professor of English, secretary; Dr. Ray Ewing, chair of the Department of Speech Communication and Theatre, treasurer; and Dr. Ferrell Ervin, chair of the Department of Mass Communications, public relations director.
