Local Republican and Democratic Party loyalists will gather separately later this week to begin the process of selecting delegates for their parties’ national nominating conventions.
The process will begin Thursday for Democrats from Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties. Interested party members will meet at 7 p.m. at the Laborers union hall, 773 Enterprise Lane in Cape Girardeau.
The meeting is the first level of a multitiered delegate-selection process that will lead to selection of Democratic delegates and alternates to the Democratic National Convention.
The national convention will be from July 25 to 28 in Philadelphia. The delegate-selection process in Missouri includes meetings at the congressional-district level and a state convention.
Democrats must submit a form to participate in this week’s meeting, said J. Michael Davis, who chairs the Cape Girardeau County Democratic Central Committee. Copies of the form will be available at the door. The form also may be accessed online at missouridems.org.
The Cape Girardeau County Republican Caucus will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Concourse, 429 N. Broadview in Cape Girardeau. Doors will open at 9 a.m. Participants will register upon arrival, said Holly Lintner, who chairs the Cape Girardeau County Republican Central Committee.
Participants are encouraged to bring voter-identification and picture-ID cards to expedite registration, Lintner said.
Like the Democrats, the local gathering for the Republican Party will lead to a congressional caucus and then a state convention where delegates and alternates will be chosen.
The GOP national convention is scheduled for July 18 to 21 in Cleveland.
Republican and Democratic participants must be registered voters to participate in the caucuses.
