Barney was promoted to the rank of cadet private first class. A freshman, he was also awarded the Soldier's Bar for outstanding military courtesy, neatness, bearing, attitude and performance of duty.
He is the son of Kathryn Skelton of Cape Girardeau and Robert Barney of Dexter.
