The Cape Girardeau Police Department is joining a national movement to encourage citizens to drive with their headlights Friday in remembrance of those who have been killed or injured in alcohol-related crashes.
The observance is called "Lights On for Life" and is designed to serve as a reminder of law enforcement's watch for drunk drivers.
The event is part of National Drunk and Driving Prevention Month and National Holiday Lifesaver Weekend, which is held Saturday through Monday.
Lights on for Life is sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a collection of government, corporate and advocacy groups titled the National 3D Prevention Month Coalition.
"This event will hopefully prevent people from getting behind the wheel after drinking," Cape Girardeau Police Chief Howard H. Boyd said.
"This sends a positive message to the community," Boyd said. "It reminds the public that, during the holidays, law enforcement will be cracking down on those who choose to drink and drive and place innocent people's lives in jeopardy."
