The display was started in 1987 as a collaboration among the Cape Girardeau County Park Board, the Cape Girardeau County Commission and the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. What began as 11 displays set up by business, civic organizations, churches and individuals has grown to more than 200 displays that will be lit until 11 p.m. each night until Dec. 31.
