CLEARWATER LAKE -- Like all safety equipment, life jackets need care, warns the U.S. Corps of Engineers. A little extra time and attention given life jackets when they is not in use pays off in prolonged, dependable service when they are in use.

Several rules should be followed to keep your life jackets in good condition:

Let life jackets drip dry thoroughly before putting it away and store it in a well-ventilated place. Never dry it on a radiator, heater or other direct heat source.

Do not leave life jackets on board your boat for long periods of time when the boat is not in use. During winter, store life jackets at home, not on the boat. At home, keep life jackets away from oil or grease which can penetrate the fabric and cause the plastic within to deteriorate, reducing performance.

Examine the straps to be sure they are attached securely. Buckles and metal fasteners must be functional and free of rust, and the fabric must not be torn.

For information on the care and maintenance of life jackets, call the Corps of Engineers at 314-223-7777.
