JACKSON -- The 85th edition of Jackson Homecomers is less than a month away. This year's Homecomers, sponsored by Altenthal-Joerns Post 158, American Legion, will held Tuesday through Saturday, Aug. 11-15.
One of the most popular events each year at Homecomers are the talent shows that are held each night, except Wednesday when the Homecomers Queen will be chosen.
"We're taking applications from contestants to compete in the talent show," said Jim Nelson, a member of the Homecomers Talent Show Committee.
"We're looking for amateur acts of all kinds: singing, dancing, acrobatic, and instrumental. We're also looking for singles, duets, or groups to perform."
Nelson said the Tuesday and Friday evening talent shows will consist of dancers from ages 13-21. On Thursday, there will be talent other than dancing for ages 6-12 and ages 13-21. Each show will begin at 7:30 p.m.
There will also be a 5 p.m. show on Saturday for dancing talent from ages 6-12. The Saturday evening finals begin at 7:30 p.m. All shows will be held on the stage in front of the courthouse.
"There will be first, second, third and fourth place winners each night who will receive cash prizes. The first three place winners at the Saturday night finals will also receive plaques as well as cash prizes," Nelson said.
A representative from the Memphis Mid-South Fair will be in the audience Saturday evening to talk to the final contestants about competing in the Mid-South Fair in September. Nelson said this is the 32nd year Mid-South Fair sponsors have sent a representative to Jackson Homecomers.
Nelson said individuals or groups that plan to participate in this year's Homecomers Talent Show should contact Marvin Meier, 243-2100, E.P. Kurre, 243-4140, or Nelson, at 243-4462.
