The May meeting of the American Legion Post # 158 was called to order by Commander, Robert Hartle, at 8 p.m. The Color Guard advanced the colors, Chaplain, Charles T Hutson, gave the opening prayer. The pledge of allegiance to the flag, and the preamble of the American Legion Constitution were recited i~n unison by 45 members present
Program Chairman Bill Sullivan: No program due to ~illness.
Minutes of the April 1999 meeting were approved as printed. Welcomed T~om Ross, who attended his f~irst meet~ing.
Trustee: Melvin Hoffman: Second Vote: $1,201 for Air Condition Coil for Club Room. Motion and second to replace the Coil. Motion passes. A progress report o~n stage construction was given.
Financial Report: Mike Proctor Report approved as read.
Bingo: Mike Hyson: Bingo report was approved as read. Mike shared information on changes with the report sent to the State Gaming Commission. There is a need to show more activity in the area of"charitable contributions".While most of the resources from bingo activities go to charitable activities, it is not reported as such. At the present time, bingo records indicate a contribution to the Post. A detailed report on where these resources go is not provided. Therefore, the following motion was made by Harold Landgraf. "Requests for charitable contributions to the Post must be brought before the Post at it's regular monthly meeting and approved. Once the requests are approved by Post action, the bingo committee will be asked to provide the contribution from the bingo fund, providing the resources are available. Second to the motion by Bill Poe, motion carried.
Americanism Committee: Charles Hutson: Past Commanders meeting at Jer's on May 19 at 7 p.m. Requested help setting up chairs for the Memorial Day activities, meet at the Legion Hall at 8 a.m. Services at City Cementer at 9 a.m. In the event of bad weather, meet at Legion Hall. The Speaker will be Rev. Jim Matthews, ordained Baptist Minister. Scholarships: Motion to give a $500 Scholarship to a Jackson High School student. Motion passed. Motion to give a $500 Scholarship to an Oak Ridge High School student. Motion passed. Funds to come as "charitable contributions" from the bingo account.
American Legion Baseball: Motion to provide $900 to support Post 158 Legion Baseball team. Funds to come from Bingo account. Motion carried. Notice was given that future request for financial support will be forth coming. A report that the Jackson Park Board has once again denied the Post's request to allow advertising on the outfield fence of the baseball field donated to the city by Post 158.
Chil~l Welfare-Club Room -Hospital: Bill Poe Hospital equipment being well used. Club room report approved as read.
Graves Information: Glen Bollinger. Requested help putting out flags for Memorial Day. City cemetery at 1 p.m., May 28, Russell Heights at 8 a.m., May 29 (in case of rain, 1 p.m.). Flags will be taken up on June 1 at 8 a.m. There are approximately 775 flags at both locations.
House Report: Leon Laurentius Report approved as read. Thank you to Leonard Adams and Milton Nitsch for helping with house coverage. Help is needed for May 22, 29 and June l~2. Contact Leon at 243-5046.
Membership: Keith Seabaugh We now have 668 and needs four members to reach goal.

Honor Guard: Mike Proctor Two services were conducted during the month. Those who ordered photo copies of the Legion Honor Guard can pick them up at the next Honor Guard meeting. Those persons who want to place orders may do so at that time also.
Commander: Reminder of Flag day Golf tournament for the Cape V.A. Home on June 14 . Cold War Recognition Certificates (CWC): The Naval Reserve Center Cape Girardeau will be happy to help you apply for a CWC. For qualifying information contact the Center at 573-335-3051. Two signs have been acquired at no cost to the Post for future use. Nominating Committee of Jack Latimer, Charles Hutson, Vincent Schwartz and Leonard Adams were appointed.
