LED lighting to be added to Jackson Civic Center

As the Jackson Civic Center continues to take shape, builders have begun considering ways to maximize the quality of the building.

To that end, the Jackson board of aldermen approved a change order for the project for the installation of upgraded LED lighting in the gymnasium/FEMA safe room.

Several early cuts now mean the project sits under budget, allowing builders to invest in options such as LED lighting that maximize long-term benefits for users.

The change order increased the budget by $14,630, but the lights will require less maintenance and will mean less overall energy costs over the years, said public works director Rodney Bollinger via email.

He also said the new lighting will be more versatile and aesthetically pleasing, because the LEDs provide a range of settings.

The board also approved a change order for $1,431.27 for a section of the 2014 Water System Improvement Program to address a complication that arose on West Main Street near the intersection of Elmwood Boulevard.

"In the original bid, the contractor bid the street repair as asphalt," Bollinger explained. "This area of [West] Main Street is actually an old concrete street that [the Missouri Department of Transportation] overlaid with asphalt some years ago."

The extra funds reflect the difference between the originally planned asphalt-only repairs and the more expensive concrete-with-asphalt repairs.
