The fall session of the Southeast Missouri Art Academy will begin Oct 20 with four classes for youth and adults. The classes are pottery, drawing faces and figures, cartoon basics and experimental drawing. All classes are non-credit courses. Art materials for all courses will be provided by the instructor. The fall session of the Southeast Missouri Art Academy will begin Oct 20 with four classes for youth and adults.

The classes are pottery, drawing faces and figures, cartoon basics and experimental drawing.

All classes are non-credit courses. Art materials for all courses will be provided by the instructor. The fee for each course is $45, except the pottery class, which costs $80 plus another $20 for additional materials.

The pottery class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9:30 p.m. Oct. 20-Nov. 12 in the ceramics studio in the Art Building at Southeast Missouri State University. Leslie Zahner, a senior art major at the university, will teach the class. Students will learn to use the pottery wheel and work with basic handbuilding techniques.

The drawing class is open to youth ages 9 to 11 and will be taught by Brenda Seyer, who has a master of arts degree in art education. The class is scheduled from 10 a.m. until noon.

Students will learn the basics of drawing portraits and human figures and will use pencil, charcoal and color mediums to draw from a live model.

The cartoon class is open to ages 12 to adult and will be taught by Scott Anderson, who has a bachelor of arts degree in graphic design and is an ad designer and cartoonist for the Southeast Missourian. The class is scheduled from 10 a.m. until noon. Participants will learn the techniques of cartooning and bring their favorite personalities to life. Students will be asked to bring photos or reproductions of their favorite celebrities, friends or personalities to the first class session.

The experimental drawing class is open to students ages 13 to adult and will be taught by Katherine Ellinger Smith, director of the Art Academy. It is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon, and is designed for students with some drawing skills who want to try new material.
