Whitlow finishes summer education program
Deanna Whitlow of Jackson served as a member of the Girls State House of Representatives and secretary of Cockrill City's Central Committee as part of the summer government education program.
* Kathleen Frasher of Perryville, Mo., and Jessica Terry of Jackson have received scholarships from the Jack J. Isgur Foundation of Kansas City. The scholarships go to education majors who want to teach the humanities in elementary and middle schools. Frasher, the daughter of Tom and Susan Frasher of Perryville, is a senior at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Terry, the daughter of Tina and Mark Terry of Jackson, is a senior at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
The Adult Learning Center at 301 N. Clark Ave. in Cape Girardeau, is offering a free night class for learning English. The class begins Monday. Targeted are those for whom English is a second language, learning center officials said. The class will be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Call 334-3669 or 335-1820 for more information.
Shawnee High School in Wolf Lake, Ill., has earned the distinction of 2005 Academic Improvement School on the Illinois Honor Roll. The high school was one of 306 schools in the state to receive the honor. The award recognizes schools that made significant academic improvement over the past two years. In addition, schools must have shown an upward trend in state testing results.
