Harris named to Logan president's list
James Harris of Anna, Ill., was recently named to the President's List at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Ill.
McKendree College names dean's list
McKendree College of Lebanon, Ill., has released its dean's list.
Named to the list from Karnak, Ill., was Pamela Grimes, a nursing major; and from Vienna, Ill., was Melissa Stanfill, a biology major.
Two local students on OSU honor roll
Brian and Karen Ivers, both of Cape Girardeau, have been named to the Honor Roll at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. Brian is a 1999 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School, and Karen is a 2001 graduate of Notre Dame.
McKinnis receives four scholarships
Dustin McKinnis, a 2002 graduate of Central High School, will be attending Southeast Missouri state University as recipient of a number of scholarships.
McKinnis, son of Mike and Linda McKinnis of Cape Girardeau, was the winner of the Sam Walton Community Scholarship, the Cape Girardeau All-School Booster Club Scholarship, the Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Scholarship and the Cape Girardeau Community Teachers' Association Scholarship.
Spitzmiller receives Seabaugh scholarship
Brandon Spitzmiller of Jackson, Mo., a senior majoring in manufacturing engineering technology at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named the recipient of the Otto and Della Seabaugh Engineering Technology Endowed Scholarship.
The Seabaughs established the scholarship in March 2001 to help young people who need financial assistance in completing their education. The Seabaugh Scholarship is for junior- and senior-level students who desire to have a career in the engineering technology field. Scholarship awards are for a minimum of $1,500 pear year and can be renewed upon reapplication. The recipients of this scholarship must be a graduate of Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, Scott or Perry County schools and live in the county at the time the scholarship is granted. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average and continue to major in engineering technology.
Phelps receives three scholarships
Cristy Phelps has been awarded the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship, as well as a Bright Flight Scholarship and a Curator's Scholarship from the University of Missouri at Columbia.
Phelps graduated sixth in her class at Central High School and is enrolled at the Honors College of University of Missouri. She is the daughter of Dan and Carolyn Phelps of Cape Girardeau.
Notre Dame graduate gets doctorate degree
Christine M. Hrach of St. Louis has received a doctor of medicine degree from St. Louis University during SLU's 2002 Commencement held May 18. She is a 1994 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School.
Pingel places second at FBLA conference
Whitney Pingel, a student at Central High School, recently won recognition at a national conference for Future Business Leaders of American. Pingel placed second in Word Processing II. She will be a senior at Cape Central in the fall, and is the daughter of Dale and Rene Pingel.
Last April, Pingel won first place in Word Processing II at the Missouri FBLA State Conference/Competition. At nationals she represented Missouri competing against other first and second place state winners from the United States, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Europe.
Other members of the Cape Girardeau FBLA team attending the 2002 National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tenn., were Carissa Moore, Lauren Parrent, and Misouri State FBLA president Brian Mueller. Advisers accompanying the students were Cheryl Kratchovil and Rene Pingel.
Spitzmiller graduates with distinction
Gretchen Spitzmiller of Gordonville, Mo., recently graduated magna cum laude and graduated with distinction in the department of her major area in graduation ceremonies at Southeast Missouri State University. Spitzmiller graduated after completing a bachelor of science in education degree at Southeast.
Enrollment dates for Kelly schools announced
Kelly High School has announced enrollment dates for its coming school year. Enrollment for seniors will be Monday, July 29, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; enrollment for juniors will be Tueday, July 30, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; sophomores will enroll Wednesday, July 31, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and freshmen will enroll Thursday, Aug. 1, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. High school students will receive class schedules and locker assignments.
Kelly Middle School enrollment will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, for grades six, seven and eight. Middle school students will receive class schedules, locker assignments and a supply list.
Kelly Elementary School teacher assignments for Grades K-5 will be posted in the elementary lobby beginning Monday, July 29, through Thursday, Aug. 1, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A supply list will be available.
Registration for K-12 students new to the district will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2. Students or parents of students will need to bring birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization records, emergency information and records and grades from their previous school.
Two Cape students honored at Drury U.
Jason Lee Owen and Mary Beth Owen, both of Cape Girardeau, were two of several students honored recently by Drury University for outstanding academic achievement. Jason is a graduate of Central High School and is now a junior at the university. Both were named as a College Swimming Coaches Association of America Academic All-Americans. Jason and Mary Beth are the children of John and Anne Owen of Cape Girardeau.
Student joins run to benefit leukemia
Jessica Lawrence of Cape Girardeau, a senior majoring in physical therapy at Maryville University in St. Louis, recently joined a run in the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphonma Society. She raised about $4,000 in honor of Ethan Herman, the brother of a friend who was diagnosed with leukemia.
Lawrence ran with about 22,000 runners.
Green graduates with distinction
Christina Green of Cape Girardeau was recently congratulated while participating in the spring honors convocation at Southeast Missouri State University. Green was honored for graduating with academic distinction within the School of Graduate Studies and Research. She graduated with a master of natural science degree with a major in mathematics.
Memorial scholarship established for Kondrad
The Jeff Kondrad Memorial Scholarship has been established through the Southeast Missouri State University Foundation. A $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student each spring, with $1,000 provided each semester the student maintains a minimum 3.0 grade-point average.
The scholarship recipient must be a senior at Scott City High School in the top one-third of his high school class and must be enrolled as a full-time student at Southeast. Other consideration will be given to the candidate's involvement and leadership in organizations sponsored by Scott City High School; involvement in voluntary civic organizations that aim to better the Southeast Missouri region, and financial need.
The recipient will be selected by a Scholarship Committee composed of Dana Kondrad, Lynne (Kondrad) Spriggs, Lisa (Kondrad) Farmer, Tim Hester, Keith Hinkebein, and Kevin Weisenborn.
The scholarship was named for Jeffery Dean Kondrad, son of Larry and Martha Kondrad. Kondrad, 37, died from a brain aneurysm in 2001. Kondrad graduated from Scott City High School in 1982.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in marketing from Southeast in 1986.
Russell wins Students' Choice award again
Keith Russell, professor of accounting, finance, and business law at Southeast Missouri State University, is the first two-time winner of the Students' Choice Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Donald L. Harrison College of Business.
The Students' Choice Award was established in 1994 by the Donald L. Harrison College of Business to recognize sustained excellence in teaching effectiveness and student learning. The award is presented on behalf of the Dean's Student Advisory Council, which selects an individual on the business faculty to be recognized with the award.
Russell received the award for the first time in 1995.
During his past 17 years at Southeast, Russell has received the Faculty of the Year Award, the University Educator of the Year Award and the Copper Dome Fellowship for Teaching Excellence in the Harrison College of Business.
Professor to attend summer seminar
Darcy Buerkle has been selected from a national applicant pool to attend one of 23 summer study opportunities supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Buerkle will participate in a seminar entitled "Motherhood and the Nationstate in Western Societies: Modern Times." The six-week program will be held at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at Stanford University. The 15 professors selected to participate in the program each receive a stipend of $3,700 to cover their travel, study, and living expenses.
Buerkle is the daughter of Joe Buerkle of Cape Girar-deau and Julia Juden of Denver, Colo. She will join the faculty in the department of history at Smith College in Northampton, Mass., in the fall.
Student in China named to dean's list
Ryan Fenwick of Cape Girardeau has been named to the dean's list of the School of Arts and Sciences at St. Louis University for the fall and spring semesters of the 2001-2002 academic year. To be named to the dean's list, a student must attain a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher while completing at least 12 semester hours of credit.
Fenwick spent the 2001-2002 fall and spring semesters studying at Beijing Institute of Technology in Beijing, China. He will return in the fall to St. Louis Unversity, where he is majoring in communications and international studies.
He also accepted membership in Golden Key International Honour Society during the spring semester at SLU. Fenwick is a 1999 graduate of Notre Dame High School. He is the son of Steve and Nancy Fenwick of Cape Girardeau.
