Moore gets music, Bright Flight scholarshps
Justin Moore of Cape Girardeau has received a music scholarship from Southeast Missouri State University and a Bright Flight scholarship. Moore is a 2004 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School. He is the son of Joey and Wanda Moore of Cape Girardeau, and plans to major in music education and vocal performance at Southeast.
Two pupils chosen 'best' in ninth-grade class
Gabrielle Garritano and Rex Meyr were chosen as "best all around" students of the year among ninth-graders at R.O. Hawkins Junior High School. The students were chosen by the school faculty for excellence in academics, athleticism, attitude and volunteer work. Garritano is the daughter of Marc and Joan Sanders. Meyr is the son of Rex and Pat Meyr.
Area students get math, science scholarships
Philanthropic Education Organization Chapter BI awarded two full scholarships, valued at $300 each, to Adeline Yates and Emily Myers. Both girls attended Central Middle School and will attend the junior high in the upcoming academic year. Adeline is the daughter of Ted and Margaret Yates; Emily is the daughter of Darell and Mia Myers. The scholarships provide a learning opportunity titled "Sciencescape," specifically for girls in grades six and seven with an interest in science and mathematics at Cottey Junior College, a fully accredited liberal arts college in Nevada, Mo. From June 13 to 19 the girls will live on campus while taking classes in biology, chemistry, computers, logic and mathematics. Yates and Myers are two of 36 participants chosen from across the United States.
P&G scholarships go to area students
Two local students recently received scholarships from the P&G Fund Scholarship Competition. Jacob Knepp, a Central High School student, and David Kiblinger, a Notre Dame Regional High School student, were selected as children of P&G employees. P&G awarded 134 scholarships to outstanding students this year.
Little graduates from Truman State with honors
Sara Little of Cape Girardeau graduated magna cum laude from Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. Little received a bachelor's degree in psychology. She is the daughter of Jim and Melba Little.
Local student named to Westminster dean's list
Bradley Main of Cape Girardeau has been named to the dean's list at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., for the spring 2004 semester. He is the son of Jim and Margie Main.
Hoffstetter, Obermann named to dean's list
Talitha Hoffstetter of Gordonville and Andrew Obermann of Chaffee, Mo., were recently named to the spring 2004 semester dean's list at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo.
Meadow Heights names grand prize winners
Meadow Heights High School students Thomas Mitchell and Rebecca Brown were recognized recently as grand prize winners in the Meadow Heights Booster Club's students of the month contest. As grand prize winners, Mitchell and Brown received gift cards.
Johns graduates with honors from SMSU
Paul Johns, a graduate of Jackson High School, recently graduated magna cum laude from Southwest Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree in Latin and antiquities. He plans to pursue a doctorate in classics at Ohio State University this fall. Johns is the son of Roger and Tammy Johns of Kerrville, Texas.
Robertson accepted to Harvard law school
Christopher Robertson has been accepted to the Harvard School of Law for the upcoming fall semester. Robertson received his doctorate of philosophy from Washington University in 2003. In December he was awarded a doctorate of philosophy at Washington University in St. Louis. He is the son of Steve Robertson and Mary Robertson of Cape Girardeau, and is a 1993 graudate of Central High School. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1997.
Jackson student receives scholarshp to Baylor
Daniel Hooks, a student at R.O Hawkins Junior High in Jackson, is one of four students nationally to receive a merit scholarship to attend Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn. Hooks is the son of David and Priscilla Hooks of Gordonville.
Hopkins named to honor roll at C-SC
Joshua Hopkins of Jackson has been named to the 2004 spring semester Honor Roll at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo. Students on the honor roll have earned a 3.2 to 3.49 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, and been enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours with no course grade lower than a C.
Area students place first in statewide contest
The following local students recently placed in a statewide coloring contest held by the Freeway Foundation, a drug- and violence-free schools resource organization:
First place (second grade) -- Janelle Myers, daughter of Julious and Teresa Myers, Oak Ridge Elementary.
First place (fifth grade) -- Kaycie Seyer, daughter of Andrew and Lisa Seyer, Oak Ridge Elementary.
First place (fourth grade) -- Dylan Statler, son of Mark and Carla Statler, Meadow Heights Elementary.
Young writers honored at achievement awards
Twenty-seven young writers from 43 elementary, middle and high schools in Southeast Missouri and the St. Louis area were honored at the 23rd annual Southeast Missouri Writing Achievement Awards program in April. Local award winners included Notre Dame Regional High School students Claire Bira and Austin Critchlow; Tori Pfau of St. Vincent de Paul School in Cape Girardeau; Bonan Wang of Cape Girardeau Central High School; Ashley Bartels of Jackson High School; Chris Shelton of R.O. Hawkins Junior High School in Jackson; Leopold School District students Molly Brotherton, Gregg Jones, Whitney Lukefahr, Erin Nanney and Marissa VanGennip; Perryville High School student Mary Nations; and St. Vincent Elementary School of Perryville students Mariah Thompson and Mallory Tucker. Wang won first place for fiction, grades 10-12. Honorable mentions went to Bira for fiction, grades 7-9; Critchlow, fiction, grades 10-12; Pfau, poetry, grades 7-9; Bartels, essay, grades 10-12; Shelton, essay, grades 7-9; Brotherton, fiction, grades 7-9; Jones, fiction, grades 4-6; Lukefahr, essay, grades 4-6; Nanney, poetry, grades 10-12, VanGennip, essay, grades 7-9; Nations, essay, grades 10-12; Thompson, essay, grades 4-6; and Tucker, fiction, grades 4-6.
