Educare program earns service award
Cape Girardeau Educare recently received the Early Childhood Collaboration Distingushed Service Award from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The award was given in recognition of the collaborative efforts in improving the quality of life for young children and their families.
Educare, located at 111 Linden inside East Missouri Action Agency, is funded through a grant from Southeast Missouri State University and the Department of Social Services and has been involved in improving the quality childcare in the area for the past 8 years.
Educare provides parenting assistance through child development programs, referrals and programs that prepare children for school. Training and technical assistance for local childcare providers is also available.
Student wins scholarship to Westminster, awards
Bradley M. Main has been accepted to Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.
He has been awarded the Churchill Scholarship, the Alumni Award and the Boy's State Award, which combined cover full tuition.
Main plans to major in history, and is currently a senior at Central High School. He is the son of Jim and Marge Main.
Career fair in Tamms draws big crowd
TAMMS, Ill. -- Three hundred people turned out for Egyptian School's Technology/Health/ Career Fair on March 13.
Shirley Grundy's fifth-grade class won grand prize for classroom projects for Iditarod 2003; fifth-graders Alexa Miller, Krystal Caldwell, Tim Dickerson, Jennifer Honey and Jordan Oxford won grand prize for group projects for Project Expand;
Grand prize for individual entry, Lindsey Vaughn for project on space; grand prize in the middle/high school for group project, Ada Orsorio and Lionel Hopkins for Vietnam Wall.
Classroom grand prize winners received a pizza party. The group and individual grand prize winners received $50.
Kindergarten registrations scheduled in April
Local schools holding upcoming kindergarten registrations and screenings are:
Scott City Elementary School, kindergarten registration, 8 to 11 a.m., noon to 3:30 p.m., and 5 to 7 p.m. April 10 in the school lobby. Bring birth certificate, immunization records and Social Security card.
Egyptian School in Tamms, Ill., kindergarten and prekindergarten screenings and registration will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday. For an appointment, call (618) 776-5251, extensions 176, 177 or 178. Bring birth certificate and immunization records to registration.
Shawnee Elementary South in McClure, Ill., kindergarten registration, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Bring child's birth certificate, immunization record, insurance card or Medicaid number and Social Security card. For an appointment, call (618) 661-1504.
Prekindergarten and kindergarten enrollment is currently taking place at Trinity Lutheran School in Cape Girardeau. For more information, call 334-1068.
Jackson student chosen for state scholars program
Jackson High School senior Sarah Luerhs has been selected for the 2003 Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri's top academic seniors.
Students will be recognized at a luncheon at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Mo., on April 27.
Selection for the program is mainly based on student's grade point average and ACT or SAT score, as well as factors such as attendance and extracurricular activities.
Whitlow inducted into honor society
Brooks Whitlow of Patton, Mo., was recently inducted into the Honor Society of Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tenn.
Whitlow, a junior business major, is a member of Phi Beta Lambda, a graduate of Meadow Heights High School and the son of John and Regina Whitlow.
Local student awarded scholarship to Quincy
Zach Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mitch Miller of Cape Girardeau, has been awarded the Sherrill Hanks Scholarship to Quincy University in Quincy, Ill.
Miller is a 1999 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School and is a senior marketing major and tennis player at Quincy.
The Sherrill Hanks scholarship is awarded to athletes in good academic standing who participate in an intercollegiate sport for which athletic grants are not traditionally available.
