Four area students named to CMSU dean's list

Four Cape Girardeau students have been named to the Central Missouri State University dean's list. Terra Herzberger and Adele Propst achieved perfect 4.0 grade point averages for the fall semester. Thomas McCausland and Erin Moon were among students on the dean's list who achieved 3.5 to 3.9 grade point averages.

Area student named to MBC honor's list

Laura J. Brown of Cape Girardeau was named to the fall 2003 honor's list at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va. Brown is the daughter of Gary Brown.

Students receive Regents' scholarships

Sarah Crump of Cape Girardeau, Janessa Burford of Benton, Mo., Stephanie Mansker of Oran, Mo., and Jonathan Beasley of Jackson have received Regents' scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2004-2005 academic year. Crump will graduate this year from Cape Girardeau Central High School. She is the daughter of Rick and Carolyn Crump of Cape Girardeau. Burford will be a 2004 graduate of Kelly High School. She is the daughter of Lenny and Jane Burford of Benton. Mansker will graduate this year from Oran High School. She is the daughter of Allen Mansker of Morley, Mo., and Susan Mansker of Oran. Beasley will graduate this year from Jackson High School. He is the son of William and Christy Beasley of Jackson.

Panhellenic Council at Southeast receives award

The Panhellenic Council at Southeast Missouri State University received the Philanthropy and Community Service Award at the Mid-American Greek Council Association Conference, held Feb. 19 to 22 in Chicago. To qualify for recognition, the councils for sororities must prepare and submit reports documenting the programs and campus governance they participated in during the past calendar year. Councils qualifying for the overall individual excellence awards must earn at least 70 percent of the points available in each of eight award categories.

Prater earns achievement award to Southeast

Jacqueline Prater of McClure, Ill., has received a Regional Achievement Award to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2004-2005 academic year. She will graduate this year from Shawnee High School in Illinois. She is the daughter of Charles and Julie Prater of McClure.

Shelton earns President's Plus scholarship

Matthew Shelton of Jackson has been awarded a President's Plus Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2004-2005 academic year. Shelton will graduate this year from Jackson High School. He is the son of Jeffery and Carol Shelton of Jackson.

Jackson grad named to SMU honor roll

Jenna Leet, a graduate of Jackson High School, was named to the fall 2003 semester honor roll at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Leet is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Greg Leet of Jackson. She is a freshman at SMU.

Jackson FCCLA goes for the gold at tech event

The Jackson FCCLA recently competed in four events at a district competition and earned gold ratings in each to advance to the state competition. The FCCLA competed against schools in three other districts in the applied technology event, focus on children event, chapter showcase manual event and chapter service project event. The competition was a STAR -- Students Taking Action for Recognition -- event, which involves only FCCLA members with the highest amount of activity points.

Chaffee student earns state Leadership Award

Natalie Townsend of Chaffee, Mo., has been awarded a Missouri Leadership Award to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2004-2005 academic year. She will graduate this year from Chaffee High School. She is the daughter of Jon and Tonyua Townsend of Chaffee.

Masons offer scholarships to area high schools

The Masonic Lodges of Alexander, Johnson, Pulaski and Union counties are offering scholarships to seniors at eight local high schools. Applicants must be in the top 40 percent of their class after seven semesters of high school, be a resident of Illinois and have no other scholarship. Applications are available in high school counselors offices. Deadline is April 2.

New named to Southwest Baptist trustees' list

Kristina New has been named to the fall 2003 trustees' list at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo. New is the daughter of Ellen New of Charleston, Mo., and Kenny and Cynthia New of Cape Girardeau. She is a 2003 graduate of Kelly High School in Benton, Mo. Students listed on the trustees' list have been enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and earned a grade point average of 3.85 to 4.0.

Sirimaturos named to college 'Who's Who'

Michael Sirimaturos of Cape Girardeau is among 99 University of Mississippi students named to the 2004 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges." Sirimaturos, the son of Chris Sirimaturos, is a senior pharmacy major. He is student body president of the School of Pharmacy.

President's scholarship goes to Scott City student

Jessica Estes of Scott City has been awarded a President's Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2004-2005 academic year. She will graduate this year from Scott City High School. She is the daughter of Sandy Estes and the late Kim Estes.

SEMO District Fair offering scholarships

The SEMO District Fair Foundation is taking applications for $600 scholarships. Applicants must have completed 30 hours or be enrolled as a sophomore or junior attending a Missouri college with an agriculture or related major. Area students inducted into Phi Eta Sigma

Julie Essner of Chaffee, Mo. and Jessica Bill of Jackson were recently inducted into the honor society Phi Eta Sigma at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. Essner is the daughter of Donald and Clara Essner, and the granddaughter of Simon and Clara Essner and Albert and Martha Eftink. She is a 2003 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School and is studying early childhood education. Bill is the daughter of Larry and Tina Bill and the granddaughter of David and Carol Bill and Louis Bundy. She is a 2003 graduate of Jackson High School and is majoring in mass media.

Duncan earns spot on dean's list at StLCoP

Adam Duncan of New Hamburg has been named to the fall 2003 semester dean's list at St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Duncan is the son of Jimmy and Marilyn Duncan. He is a 2002 graduate of Kelly High School.

Area students named to Vanderbilt dean's list

Three local students were named to the fall 2003 semester dean's list at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

Lisa Crain, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Crain of Cape Girardeau, received high honors on the list.

Meredith Toole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adrian V. Toole, and Amanda Gould, daughter Cathy Gould of Jackson, were named to the list.

VFW essay winners named at luncheon

Thirty-six local students were recently honored at a youth awards luncheon held by the 15th District VFW and ladies auxiliary.

In the "Voice of Democracy" taped essay contest, 9th-12th grade winners were:

1st place -- Tyler Holt of Sikeston, Mo.

2nd place -- Sonia Tikoo of Cape Girardeau

3rd place -- Amber Seyer of Oran, Mo.

In the "Patriot's Pen" essay contest, 7th-8th grade winners were:

1st place -- Lindsay Poole of Jackson

2nd place -- Trisha Counce of Caruthersville, Mo.

3rd place -- Grace Blades of Jackson.

The first-place winners were entered into the state competition, where they both took fourth place in their contests.

Domain named to Miami University dean's list

Kathleen T. Domain of Cape Girardeau was named to the 2003 fall semester dean's list at Miami University in Ohio.

Area high schools take part in scholar bowl

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Almost 150 local high school students participated in an invitational scholar bowl tournament at Perry High School recently. The students answered questions in the areas of mathematics, history, foreign languages, literature, geography, biology, science and other categories in a three round, four game format in the morning sessions. Winners were Notre Dame Regional High School, first place; Poplar Bluff High School, second place; Central High School, third place; and Perryville High School, fourth place. Local individual high medal recipients were: Kent Buxton from Notre Dame and Timm Yamnitz from Perryville.
