The following students were recognized at the 26th annual High School Art Symposium at Southeast Missouri State University.

First-place drawing -- Megan McDonald, Central High School

Second-place sculpture -- Jessica Huck, Central High School

First-place painting -- Daniel Barker, Woodland High School

Second-place photography -- Kristin Smith, Jackson

First-place ceramics -- Roquelle Beck, Central High School

Second-place ceramics -- Bobbie Jones, Central High School

Butler earns spot on Centenary dean's list

Angel Butler of Scott City was among 319 students named to the fall 2003 semester dean's list at Centenary College in Shreveport, La.

Cape native graduates with honors from UMC

Christy Jansen of Cape Girardeau graduated summa cum laude from the University of Missouri-Columbia during winter commencement ceremonies.

Burger named to St. Louis University dean's list

Major Burger of Chaffee, Mo., has been named to the dean's list for the fall 2003 semester at St. Louis University's Doisy School of Allied Health Professions. Burger is a freshman in the department of investigative and medical services.

Kurre named to Malone College dean's list

Erika Kurre has been named to the fall 2003 dean's list at Malone College in Canton, Ohio. Kurre is the daughter of Terry and Paula Kurre of Canton, Ohio, and the granddaughter of Marilyn Priest of Jackson.

Scott City students make UMR honor list

ROLLA, Mo.-- The following students from Scott City were named to the honor list at the University of Missouri-Rolla for the 2003 fall semester: Ashley June Bedwell, Neal Edward Essner and Robert Jake Vetter.

Area students nominated to military academies

Local students were recently nominated for entrance into military service academies. They included Lee Wilson of Sikeston, Mo., for the U.S. Military Academy-West Point in New York; Joseph Moroni of Oran, Mo., for the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, N.Y.; John Ray of Cape Girardeau for the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.; Mark Dunaway of Cape Girardeau for the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
