Marching band to play in Jackson today

The Cape Central Marching Band will take part in the Jackson Band Festival today. Last weekend, under the direction of Neil Casey, Josh Lamar, Billy Keys and Dina Strickert, the marching band placed third in the SIU-Music in Motion Band Competition in Carbondale, Ill.

The band will travel to Washington High School in Washington, Mo., to compete Saturday.

Teacher's photos on exhibit at school

The Cape Central High School library staff is inviting the public to view an informal exhibit of the photography of Dr. Al Nicolai, an English teacher at the school.

The display, called "A Sense of Place," opened Monday and will continue through Oct. 19 during regular school hours. It features a small selection of travel photos taken in the United States and Europe.

Animal program set for Wednesday at library

The Cape Girardeau Public Library will present Animal Roundup for ages 3-7 Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Children can get to know man's best friend with stories and a special dog craft to make and take home. No registration is required.

Grisham novel subject of discussion group

Dr. Jimmy Jones of Southeast Missouri State University will lead discussions on "A Painted House" by John Grisham at the Great Books discussion at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Hirsch Room at the Cape Girardeau Public Library.

The Great Books series is co-sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Public Library and the Center for Regional History. Meetings are alternate Thursdays from 2-4 p.m. in the Hirsch Community Room.

"The House on Riddle Hill" by Glenn Tompkins will be the book discussed at the Oct. 18 meeting.

Discipline seminar scheduled for Saturday

Child Care Resource/Workshop on Wheels and Success by 6 will host an early childhood seminar on Brain Smart Discipline from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in Dempster Hall at Southeast Missouri State University.

The seminar is a personal and professional development opportunity for parents, childcare providers and other individuals working directly in early education of young children.

Cheri Sheridan, an animated writer and speaker, will present the seminar.

Three win certificates in Knights essay contest

The Knights of Columbus Council 6420 at Scott City recently presented Certificates of Honorable Merit to Matthew Koehler, Daniel Schaefer and Chelsea Criddle, winners who qualified for competition in the Knights of Columbus State Essay Contest.

Koehler, 11, is the son of Steve and Mary Koehler of Scott City; Schaefer, 15, is the son of Marcus and Vickie Schaefer of Benton; and Criddle, 13, is the daughter of Brian and Laura Criddle of Cape Girardeau.

Judging of the essays was based on content, thought, grammar, spelling and neatness.

Blanchard students raise money for Red Cross

Students at Blanchard Elementary sold $285 worth of popcorn, chips and raffle tickets Thursday. The money will be donated to the Red Cross to help victims of the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

Bags of popcorn and chips usually sold for 25 cents were sold for 50 cents, and raffle tickets for a big bag of candy were sold for $1.

Cape Elks name students of the month

The Cape Girardeau Elk's Lodge No. 639 recognized Kyla Smith, Marquis Brookins and Lindsay Kuper as Students of the Month for September.

Smith, daughter of Rodney Smith and Barb Herndon, is a senior at Scott City High School. Smith hopes to attend Southeast Missouri State University with an undecided major next year.

Brookins, son of Lawrence Brookins Jr., is a senior at Cape Central High School. He hopes to attend Southeast for one year, then transfer to Truman State University at Kirksville, Mo., to major in music and English.

Kuper, daughter of Lenny Kuper, is a senior at Notre Dame High School. She hopes to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she will major in marine biology.

Health teacher named Educator of the Year

Robyn Gross, a health teacher at Central High School, was chosen as the 2001 Health Educator of the Year for Missouri.

Gross was selected by the Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and will be recognized at a ceremony at the Lodge of the Four Seasons Nov. 17. With the recognition, Gross also qualifies in the central district for Health Educator of the Year. That winner will be announced in February, and a national winner will be announced in April.

Student donates ponytail to hair charity

Melissa Anderson, 10, of Cape Girardeau donated 15 1/2 inches of her hair to the Locks of Love charity in September.

Anderson, who is a fifth-grader at St. Vincent De Paul School, had her ponytail cut off at JCPenny's Beauty Salon in Cape Girardeau.

Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children across the U. S. under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

Kelly High School adviser wins state honor

Marty Powers of Kelly High School was recognized as the Missouri Student Council Adviser of the Year by the Missouri Association of Student Councils Executive Board.

Powers has been a student council adviser for 22 years, with the last six spent in Kelly. He also serves on the MASC Summer Leadership Institute staff and National Leadership Camps across the United States, including Tennessee and Illinois.

Powers has been nominated for the National Association of Student Councils Warren E. Shull Adviser of the Year award. The winner will be announced at the national convention in June.

Story hour to focus on fire prevention

Fire prevention will be the topic of the Scott County R-IV Preschool Story Hour Wednesday for students 3-5 years old. The story hour will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Kelly Elementary Library.

The topic for Oct. 17 is Silly Stories.
