Central High students win word competition
Seventh-grader Adam Hinton and eighth-grader Michael Miller of Central High School were named champions in the grade-level challenge of the Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge. Following a written test, the top 100 scorers in sixth, seventh and eighth grades nationally will be invited to compete in the state championship on March 20. State winners will advance to the national championship in April and a chance to compete for college scholarships.
Jackson High School band members Jenney Watson, Amanda Craven, Phillip DeCoursey, Chris Palisch and Brad Culbertson have been selected to the Missouri All-State Band. The band of 108 students from across the state will perform at the Missouri Music Educators Association conference at the Lake of the Ozarks later this month. Watson, first chair alto clarinet, is the daughter of Bridget and Dan Watson. Craven, third chair bassoon, is the daughter of William and Brenda Craven. DeCoursey, first chair contra clarinet, is the son of Dr. Kenneth and Brenda DeCoursey. Palisch, alternate baritone saxophone, is the son of John and Pat Palisch. Culbertson, honorable mention trombone, is the son of Pat and Russ Culbertson.
Jan Eftink of Chaffee, Mo., was named to the chancellor's honor roll at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss., for the fall semester.
Jackson residents Christopher Bramlett, Chase LeighAnn Crowell, Blake Leming, Lucas McIntosh, Eric Poythress, Eric Roth, Jared Schoen, Ryan Sitzes and Amanda Sutterer were named to the fall semester dean's list at the University of Missouri-Rolla.
