Four receive Southeast President's Scholarships

With burford, Pombert and Randolph pics 1/22

Alana J. Burford of Benton, Mo., Brian M. Randolph of Cape Girardeau, Layne A. Pombert of Jackson, Mo., and Kyla J. Smith of Scott City, Mo., have each been awarded a President's Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2002-03 school year.

The President's Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who achieve an ACT composite score of 24, rank in the upper 20 percent of their high school class or achieve a high school grade-point average of 3.5.

Burford is the daughter of Paul and Marilyn Burford of Benton. She plans to major in education at Southeast.

Randolph is the son of Barry and Brenda Randolph of Cape Girardeau. He plans to major in secondary education at Southeast.

Pombert is the daughter of Lisa Pombert of Jackson and Randolph Pombert of Burfordsville, Mo. She plans to major in criminal justice at Southeast.

Smith is the daughter of Rodney Smith and Barbara Herndon, both of Jackson. She plans to major in administrative systems at Southeast.

Jackson students gets good citizen award

The John Guild Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented its DAR Good Citizen Award to Jackson High School student Jennifer Goodwin at the chapter's Dec. 15 luncheon and meeting.

Goodwin is the daughter of Lisa Goodwin of Jackson.

Academy to hold informational meeting

Students who excel in math or science can enhance those skills by enrolling in the Missouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing, a program in Missouri that targets academically talented students.

The seventh of eight informational meetings throughout the state will be from 7-9 p.m. Jan. 28, in the ballroom of the University Center at Southeast Missouri State University.

Students enrolled in this two-year residential program live together on the Northwest Missouri State University campus in Maryville, Mo., and complete a rigorous program of college coursework taught by university faculty.

Kelly students will attend policy program

Elizabeth Mainord and Dustin Martin, students at Kelly High School, will attend the Presidential Classroom's Science, Technology and Public Policy Program from Feb. 9-16 in Washington D.C.

The program provides students a firsthand look at the political responses to change brought about scientific advances.

Mainord is the daughter of Scott and Alvina Mainord of Benton, Mo.

Martin is the son of Don and Denise Martin of Charleston, Mo.

Enrollment in progress for GED classes

Enrollment is now in progress for the Adult Education and Literacy GED classes at the WIB site at 760 S. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau.

Classes are free and are taught by qualified instructors. Enrollment is from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. The minimum age for enrolling is 16.

Ex-Scott City resident graduates Iowa college

Pamela Elaine Amrhein, formerly of Scott City, Mo., recently graduated from the University of Iowa at Iowa City, Iowa, with a degree in marketing.

She is the daughter of Rebecca Moffet of Fort Worth, Texas, and Brad Amrhein of Mooresville, N.C. She is the granddaughter of Sylvia McCommack and Pat and Jerry Amrhein, all of Scott City, and the late Howard McCommack.

Cape student enrolls at Dartmouth College

Stephen Stahr of Cape Girardeau has enrolled as a member of the class of 2005 at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.

Stahr is the son of William D. and Nancy C. Stahr.

Trinity gets money from Lutheran Brotherhood

Trinity Lutheran School in Cape Girardeau recently received $2,285 from Lutheran Brotherhood, a fraternal benefit society, through the society's Member Matching Gift program.

The school will use the matching funds for the Trinity School Building Fund. Since the beginning of the program in 1979, the school has received $43,204.

Five students make Drury dean's list

Stephanie Ann Arnzen, Mary Elizabeth Owen, Sarah Jeanne Slaten and Megan Jo Watson, all of Cape Girardeau, and Misty Marie Chisum of Chaffee, Mo., have been named to the Drury University dean's list for fall 2001.

Two make dean's list at Central Methodist

Jonathon P. Ressel and Mark C. Stone have been placed on the dean's list for the fall 2001 semester at Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo.

Ressel is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark G. Ressel of Kelso, Mo.

Stone is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Stone of Cape Girardeau.

Student makes dean's list at pharmacy school

Justin Lusk of Cape Girardeau was placed on the St. Louis College of Pharmacy dean's list for fall 2001.

Lusk is the son of Lonnie and Debbie Lusk of Cape Girardeau.

St. Mary student wins geographic bee

Adam Parker, a sixth-grader at St. Mary Cathedral School, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship.

Shannon James, of St. Mary's School, was runner-up in the event.

The school winners, including Adam, will now take a written test. Up to 100 of the top scorers in each state and territory will be eligible to compete in their state Bee on April 5.

Gordonville student makes dean's list

Talitha Hoffstetter of Gordonville, Mo., was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Missouri Valley College.

Scott County teachers gets highest credential

Shedel Dohogne from Scott County Central Schools is one of the 6,500 primary and secondary school teachers from 49 states and the District of Columbia to earn the highest credential in the field of teaching -- National Board Certification -- during the 2000-01 school year.

Dohogne has been in the Scott County district for seven years. She is currently the director and teacher of the Early Childhood Special Education Preschool Program.

Shawnee student to attend scholars program

Greg Martin, a student at Shawnee High School, will attend the Presidential Classroom Scholars Program from Feb. 2-9 in Washington, D.C.

Martin will join hundreds of high school students from across the country to take part in seminars presented by leaders representing each branch of government, the military, media and other Washington insiders.

Psychology major gets Governor's Scholarship

Lindsey N. St. Cin of Perkins, Mo., has been awarded a Governor's Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2002-03 school year.

St. Cin will be a 2002 graduate of Oran High School. She is the daughter of Lori and Don St. Cin. She plans to major in psychology at Southeast.

Student makes President's Honor Roll

Stephanie Jordan of Cape Girardeau was recently named to the President's Honor Roll at the Missouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing. She is the daughter of David and Joanne Jordan.

To qualify for this honor, Jordan earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the fall trimester.

Cape student graduates Truman State University

Christopher Thompson of Cape Girardeau received a bachelor of science degree in business administration at Truman State University. He is the son of Edward and Marsha Thompson.

Nursing program taking application

The Shawnee Community College nursing program is accepting applications for the fall 2002 ADN program. Entrance tests will be administered from 1-5 p.m. Jan. 29 at the main campus in room J-1023.

The application packet is available from the nursing department. Pre-registration is required and costs $34.

Holcomb students join ribbon campaign

Students in Mrs. Rees' L.I.F.E. gifted program at Nell Holcomb School joined gifted programs nationwide in the Yellow Ribbon Bow Campaign. The campaign raised money for children of the victims of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Students sold yellow ribbons for $2 each. A total of $273.41 was raised at the school, and over $40,000 was raised nationwide.

Cape student makes Cedarville dean's list

Julie Roth, daughter of Dennis and Joan Roth of Cape Girardeau, was named to the Cedarville University dean's list for the 2001 fall quarter. Roth is a sophomore majoring in communication arts.

Center offers help in health care field

The Southeastern Missouri Area Health Education Center is announcing a new academic opportunity for area high school students interested in pursuing a career in primary health care.

Through the program, students will receive one-on-one comprehensive career planning, opportunities to participate in workshops, professional shadowing and academic enrichment experiences.

The ACES/PRIMO program was primarily created to address the shortage of primary care specialties in underserved areas of rural Missouri.

College to hold blood drive Jan. 30

Shawnee Community College will host an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Wednesday, Jan. 30. The Tennessee Valley Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross supplies blood for patients in 75 hospitals in parts of Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky.

The drive will be in the SCC gym on the main campus.

To give blood you must be healthy, at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, not have donated blood in the last 56 days or donated double red cells in the last 112 days.

Community college releases honor lists

Shawnee Community College has released its fall 2001 president's and vice president's lists.

Named on the president's list were:

Cape Girardeau: Harold Huff, Gabrielle LeGrand and Robert Macklem.

Jackson: Benjamin LaPierre and Kara Ulrich.

Named on the vice president's list were:

Cape Girardeau: Raquel Qualls; and from Scott City, Derek Ham and Joseph Hann.

Mineral Area College releases dean's list

Mineral Area College has released its fall dean's list.

Local students honored on the list were:
