Foundation endows nursing scholarship

The Dorothy Lee Nilsen Scholarship for nursing students has been endowed through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.

Wedel Nilsen gave $10,000 to establish the scholarship at Southeast Missouri State University in memory of his wife.

The scholarship will be awarded for the first time for the spring semester and is open to juniors and seniors in the bachelor of science in nursing program.

Dorothy Lee Nilsen was born in 1913 in Piggott, Ark. She married Wedel Nilsen in 1952 in Elmhurst, Ill.

She received her bachelor of science degree from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

She taught for 35 years at Elmhurst and Mounds, Ill., schools and wrote teachers' manuals used in elementary schools nationwide.

The state of Illinois honored her teaching contributions in 1973.

Area students graduate with honors from CMSU

Central Missouri State University recently announced that Cheryl A. Lipe of Perryville graduated with honors during the fall 2002 commencement ceremonies. Other local graduates were Harold D. Webb and Thomas M. Nelson, both of Cape Girardeau.

Webb graduated with a master of business administration degree.

Nelson received a master of science degree at the Dec. 14 commencement.

Students named to dean's listCentral Missouri State University recently named Terra L. Herzberger of Cape Girardeau, Lisa N. Millham of Jackson, Nathan J. Hemmann, Cheryl A. Lipe, Holly L. Balsman and Windy Venable, all of Perryville to the fall semester 2002 dean's list.

Lilly receives teaching award in Jefferson City

Dr. Walt Lilly, a Southeast Missouri State University biology professor, was among 65 higher education faculty members statewide who were honored by Gov. Bob Holden last month.

The Excellence in Teaching awards were presented at a luncheon at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City.

Lilly and the award winners were selected by their respective schools for their effective teaching and advising, service to the school community, commitment to high standards of excellence and success in nurturing student achievement.

Lilly has taught at Southeast since 1982. He and fellow biologist Dr. Allen Gathman operate a fungal biology lab that provides graduate and undergraduate students with hands-on learning.

The two professors have obtained more than $600,000 in grant funds to support the research of their students.

Lilly has directed more than 40 undergraduate student research projects, 10 master's thesis research project and co-authored 19 professional journal articles with students.

Jackson woman named to dean's list

Nicole Poythress of Jackson was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

In addition, she has also been accepted into the undergraduate biomedical engineering program there, which will allow her to join a research team conducting metabolic bone research for the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering.

School to hold placement examination on Jan. 25

Notre Dame Regional High School will hold a placement exam for the class of 2007 at 8:15 a.m. Jan. 25.

All eighth graders interested in taking the exam should report to Notre Dame High School at 8 a.m. Please bring two No. 2 pencils and a calculator.

The advanced English placement test will also be given at this time for those students who are interested.

Principal Brother David Migliorino, vice principal Brad Wittenborn, faculty and staff will be present to answer any questions or to give tours of the building.

Students or parents interested in Notre Dame should call the school office for information at 335-6772.

Local resident elected to sorority office

Amanda Gosche of Cape Girardeau was recently elected to the executive council office of secretary for Zeta Alpha Sorority. The Alpha Psi chapter, with 150 members, is one of 14 sororities at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Area students win in poster contest

Mariah Thompson of Perryville, Mo., and Rachel Poythress of Jackson were recently chosen as winners from among 814 entrants in the 2002 Western Catholic Union Christmas poster and essay contest.

Thompson, a fifth grader at St. Vincent Elementary in Perryville, received $50 for her first-place win in the 4th to 6th grade essay contest.

Poythress, a eighth grader at Immaculate Conception School in Jackson, received $30 for her second-place win in the 7th to 9th grade essay contest.

Student named to president's honor roll

Alyssa Lee Holyfield of Cape Girardeau was recently named to the president's honor roll for the fall 2002 semester at Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo.
