~Correction: Event to be held at Cape Girardeau County Park.
It'll be "Lemonade, and Information" Sunday as the Cape Girardeau County League of Women Voters kicks off its annual membership campaign.
Fran Harris, membership chair, has announced that the Sunday afternoon affair will be held from 2-4 p.m. at Shelter 10 in the Cape Girardeau Park. League members will be on hand to greet guests and answer questions, and a special "League Leaf" will be available, describing LWV objectives and activities.
For further information, and to arrange transportation, Harris may be reached at 334-6838.
Diane Gregory, local League president, explains that membership is open to everyone; voting members are citizens at least 18 years of age who are enrolled in a local League, and associate members are persons enrolled who are under 18 or who are not U.S. citizens.
Purpose of the national LWV, which was officially founded in 1920, is to promote informed and active participation of citizens in government.
To this end, and underlining its status as a non-partisan political organization, LWV members study governmental issues at local, state, and national levels, and decide, by consensus, what if any action it should support.
In recent years, the Cape County LWV has been active in helping establish the Cape Girardeau city recycling project, in passage of the Cape County Health Service tax, and in promoting voter registration.
