LEADWOOD, Mo. -- The police chief in the southeast Missouri town of Leadwood has died.
Dale Newman died Wednesday night of an apparent heart attack. He was 47. Mayor Dennis Parks confirmed Newman's death on Thursday.
Parks says Newman was not on duty at the time of his death.
Newman was appointed chief in the town of 1,300 residents in February 2012 after the death of the previous chief, Jerry Hicks Sr., who died weeks earlier in an off-duty automobile accident.
Newman previously was police chief in Ste. Genevieve. He began his law enforcement career in Cape Girardeau. He was the father of two daughters.
