Ladder truck dedicated to fire department

The new 100-foot ladder truck was officially put into service by the Cape Girardeau Fire Department during a dedication ceremony Monday. The truck will be housed at the fire station No. 1 at South Sprigg Street. The department's 1986 aerial platform truck will be kept on reserve at the fire station No. 2 on South Mount Auburn Road. The ladder truck was purchased for $557,557 and delivered in October. The purchase was funded by the Public Safety Trust Fund, established following voter approval of the fire sales tax in June. The department also held a promotions ceremony due to the recent retirement of battalion chief Tom Hinkebein. Capt. Mike Ramsey was promoted to battalion chief, and firefighter/paramedic Vicki Moldenhauer was promoted to captain. Both promotions took effect Nov. 12.

Armed robbery reported on Southeast campus

A 20-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint Sunday on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University, university police said. The robbery reportedly occurred at 10:30 p.m. when the victim was unloading her vehicle on the east side of Dearmont Hall, said Department of Public Safety director Doug Richards. A male suspect carrying a small handgun approached the victim and demanded money. He received an undisclosed amount of money and some personal items, then fled east on foot, crossing Pacific Street into a residential area, Richards said. The victim described the suspect as a black man, between 5 feet, 10 inches and 6 feet tall, with a medium build, said university spokeswoman Anne Hayes. He was wearing a long white T-shirt and a black backpack. Richards said the suspect was likely between 18 and 25 years old. Anyone with information can contact DPS at 651-2215.

Bank of Missouri robber sentenced to 151 months

Eric A. Mitchell, 31, of Memphis, Tenn., was sentenced on Monday to 151 months in federal prison for robbing the Bank of Missouri at 1622 N. Kingshighway on May 20. On the morning of May 20, Mitchell entered the Bank of Missouri, wearing a black jacket and ski mask. He jumped over the counter and took $14,711 from the tellers' drawers. He drove away in a stolen maroon Oldsmobile. Police arrested Mitchell within minutes, tracking him down near Lynwood Baptist Church, police previously said. In a nearby wooded area, officers discovered a black jacket containing all the stolen cash.
