The Knights of Columbus Council 1111 recently sponsored an essay contest for students in grades five through 12 at Cape Girardeau's Catholic schools.

The topic for grades five through eight was "The Importance of Respecting Yourself and Others." The topic for grades nine through 12 was "The Importance of Setting Goals."

Winners:

Garrett Holzum, St. Vincent de Paul Grade School, grades five and six.

Cecilia Kuntz, St. Vincent de Paul Grade School, grades seven and eight.

Robert Macklem, Notre Dame High School, grades nine and 10.

The winners in each category received $50 from the council. The essays have been forwarded to the state council competition. First and second place will be awarded at the state competition. Each of those winners will receive a plaque, a certificate and a savings bond.
