KIRKWOOD, Mo. (AP) -- The family of Kirkwood Mayor Mike Swoboda says he's showing encouraging signs of a slow recovery.

His family tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he responds to their questions with nods, gestures and smiles. But they don't know whether -- or what -- he remembers about the night of February 7th, when a gunman killed five city employees.

The 69-year-old mayor took two shots to his head.

The mayor has not left his room at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in suburban St. Louis. He breathes with the help of a ventilator and relies on a feeding tube.
