CAPE GIRARDEAU - Kindergarten and pre-school screenings will be held next month by the Nell Holcomb R-4 School District.

The service is free to all families in the district.

Screenings for 3- and 4-year-olds will be April 11. Incoming kindergarteners will be screened April 12.

The purpose of the screenings is two-fold, according to the district. They help parents monitor their childrens' growth and development and, secondly, they assist in providing for the childrens' educational needs. They also encourage an early partnership between parents and educators, the district said.

The screenings cover the areas of language development, cognitive thinking skills, fine and gross motor skills, and vision and hearing.

Appointments are required. They may be made by calling 334-3644. Callers should specify which screening they are making an appointment for.

Entering kindergarteners are expected to be enrolled April 8-12. Children must be 5 years of age before July 1 to enter kindergarten.

Parents need to bring their childrens' birth certificates and immunization records at the time of enrollment.
