Dr. Richard L. Kies is sharing his surgery techniques with ophthalmologists throughout the country.
Kies, a Cape Girardeau ophthalmic surgeon, was recently featured in "Operative Profile of Ocular Surgery News," an international ophthalmic publication.
Kies was the subject of the publication's section that highlights cataract procedures of surgeons throughout the U.S.
Kies discussed his surgical technique, outlined his pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative routines for review and study by other ophthalmologists.
Kies' surgical technique is unique because he performs small incision cataract surgery that in most cases does not need a suture to close the incisions.
"I am flattered that the publication interviewed me," said Kies, a Jackson native who received his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. "I was more than happy to share my surgical technique."
Kies has offices in Cape Girardeau at 1819 Broadway.
Following graduation at UMC, he served an internship at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Kies has been a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1983; a Fellow of the American College of Eye Surgeons since 1989; and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1986.
He has served as instructor of cataract surgery in the U.S. and overseas.
Kies, his wife, Becky, and three sons reside in Cape Girardeau.
