KC district requires all principals to reapply

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Kansas City School District is requiring every principal and vice principal to reapply for their jobs.

Assistant of Human Resources Steve Harris says many of the principals will likely return to their schools. But he says with the district closing 26 schools, some principals will not be leading buildings.

The Kansas City Star reports that some of the principals likely will retire because the district is offering a buyout to eligible employees.

Superintendent John Covington says the non-renewal of principals' contracts is part of plan to put the best leaders in the schools that remain open.

Overall, the district expects to cut more than 700 jobs, including about 285 teachers.
