Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., a multi-station radio and TV broadcast company headquartered in Baltimore, Md., has entered into a purchase agreement to acquire radio and televison stations of Max Media Properties, L.L.C., which includes KBSI-TV, a Fox affiliate at Cape Girardeau, and WDKA-TV in Paducah, Ky.
The acquisition of nine television stations and eight radio stations, is subject to FCC and Justice Department approvals, and is expected to be completed during the second quarter of 1998.
The $255 million transaction will be financed with bank borrowings.
Local KBSI-TV officials could not be reached late Wednesday, but David Smith, CEO of Sinclair Broadcast Group said in a prepared statement, "The acquisition of Max Media Properties is a great opportunity for Sinclair on a number of fronts."
The television properties will expand Sinclair's coverage to nearly 20 percent of the U.S., and will to the company's present in the top 75 markets, added Smith.
"In addition, the television stations in the smaller markets have exciting growth prospects," Smith continued in his statement. "This transaction enhances our radio group as well, adding excellent properties in Norfolk, Va., and Greensboro, N.C."
This marks the second sale of KBSI during three past three years.
Max Media purchased the Cape Girardeau station in March of 1995, from Engles Communications Inc., which acquired the station in 1989.
