Kansas City man gets 25-year sentence for 1985 murder

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A Kansas City man has received a 25-year sentence after pleading guilty to a 1985 murder.

Jackson County Judge Jay Daughtery handed down the sentence Wednesday to Sidney W. Slaughter, who had pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder.

Prosecutors initially charged the 47-year-old Slaughter with first-degree murder in 2006, after his DNA was identified on the body of 1985 murder victim Patricia McMahan.

About two years ago, detectives used trace amounts of DNA from the crime scene to create a male genetic profile. A national database matched it to Slaughter, who admitted stabbing McMahan multiple times in her neck and headed.

Slaughter and McMahan worked together at a hotel and were briefly involved.
