Kansas City man convicted of shooting at troopers

PLATTE CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City man has been convicted of firing at least five shots at two Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers during a February 2003 chase.

Derrick T. Shockley, 20, was found guilty Friday of charges including armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest. Platte County prosecutor Eric Zahnd said Shockley was a passenger in a pickup truck whose driver fled from a trooper after running a red light.

As the driver sped down residential streets at speeds exceeding 60 mph, Zahnd said, Shockley leaned out the passenger window and fired four shots at the trooper. One of the shots struck the bumper of the cruiser, while another shot went through the window of a car sitting in a nearby driveway.

When another trooper joined the chase, prosecutors said Shockley fired at least one shot at him.

Shockley is currently serving time in prison for other offenses, and could face up to two life terms when he is sentenced in this case.

The driver of the truck, Ariel Lugo, 21, was sentenced to 25 years in prison in July 2004 for his role in the pursuit and shootings.
