Cape Girardeau Central Junior High School students were recognized for excellence during the annual awards ceremony in Central Auditorium Friday.
The Special Service Award went to ninth-grader Angie McFerren. McFerren was a football and basketball cheerleader, a member of the newspaper staff, band, Student Council, and a peer mediator. She is the daughter of Al and Marilyn McFerren.
McFerren was the 20th recipient of the award, the highest honor given to a junior high student. Faculty members based their nominations on leadership, scholarship and character.
Eighth-grader Cassie Gross was recognized as the first-place winner of the Missouri Peace Officer Association Award. She received a certificate and $300 prize from special agent in charge Don Schneider of the St. Louis office of the Secret Service and Police Chief Rick Hetzel for her essay, "Why I Will Say NO to Alcohol and Drugs." She is the daughter of Chris and Debby Gross.
Other major award winners were Lorie Bittle, Heather Hey, Eric Daniel Niswonger and Ricky Ogles. Bittle won the Paul Schnare Spirit Award. Hey and Niswonger were American Legion Award recipients. Ogles received the Daughters of the American Revolution award for outstanding work in American history.

-- Foreign language awards were given in three categories. Latin award winners were Mary Beth Own and Beth Bishop. French award winners were Omar Fouad, Jennifer Daume and Sara Little. Spanish award winners were Jennifer Taylor, Sarah Brown and Rashida Wilson.
-- Two business awards were given. Arkita Lee won the keyboarding award. Nichole Zoellner won the introduction to business award.
-- Physical Education award winners: Kelley Green, Mark Barylski, Ashley Voerg and Justin Welker.
-- The art award was received by Ryan Bollwerk.
-- Mackenzie Price won the family/consumer science award.
-- Two industrial arts awards were given. Chris Barrows won the wood technology award. Eric Daniel Niswonger won the introduction to industrial technology award.
-- Vocal music award winners: Laura Clark and Matt Komorech.
-- Band awards went to Erin Haycraft, Danielle Milam, Larry Rhodes, Ross Redfearn, Christina Vannostrand and Eric Wilke.
-- Orchestra award winners: Bruce Dirden, Laura Crump and Stephanie Chen.
-- Yearbook award winners: Erin Ross and Lillian Dean.
-- Alyssa Holyfield won the newspaper award.
-- Student Council awards winners: Ross Redfearn, Joanna Lee and Katie McLain.
